Baby showers can be fun but can turn into stressful affairs if they aren’t planned properly. In this guide, we will help you plan and throw the perfect baby shower.
A background talk with the mommy-to-be
Do not underestimate this talk with mommy because it will influence all of the major decisions that you will need to make during the preparation and running of the shower.
Check our handy list below for potential questions you may need to ask
- When is the best date to throw the shower
- Would she prefer to accept gifts or request books for the baby instead
- If she is accepting gifts, does she want to be registered somewhere
- Where will you throw the shower, your home, mommy’s home or a third party
- Cocktails or mocktails, or maybe both?
- The preferred theme, or maybe the mom-to-be will allow you to choose the best fit
- Who needs to be invited, going directly to the mom now will save embarrassment and awkward moments later. This is also important so you can draw up a list of guests to send Invitations to.
There may be more questions to ask, but the point of this exercise is to get as much information and agreement from the mom-to-be so all you have to do is go out and make it happen.
If after your conversation with mommy it might be decided that a third party venue is required. If this is the case then you will have to find a suitable available venue in the area for the intended date of the shower.
Once you have a date, venue and a list of guests you can then have the invitations produced, or to save on the budget why not print them yourself. We have another of invitations templates to choose from, take a look here.
Sometimes people take the opportunity to send books for the baby request cards along with the invitations. These are normally sent when the mom-to-be would prefer to start the baby’s book collection rather than expect a gift.
If you agreed on a theme with the mom-to-be then you’re going to need decorations, this could include banners, table & welcome signs, a diaper cake, centrepieces etc. Whatever you choose, be sure that you have these items to hand for the day before, this will allow you ample time to decorate the venue to perfection without stressing about loose ends.
Food and drink
Top tip, do not skimp on the food, well-fed guests are happy guests! Depending on your budget you could hire an outside caterer, or take a more homemade approach if you are a dab hand in the kitchen.
Whatever you choose make sure that the food is bitesize and easy to eat, the last thing you want to do is proving your guests with food that requires a knife and fork to eat, it has the result of killing the atmosphere in the room if people are just perched in their respective corners trying to eat.
Finally, are you going to have a baby shower cake, if so you may need to order this week in advance before the date as professionally decorated cakes can take a long time to be finished?
Gifts + Entertainment
Most showers have a moment on the day where all the guests gather around the mom-to-be whilst she opens the guests that her loved guests have bought for her and the baby. Depending on how many gifts there are there are a couple of tactics that you can employ to keep the mood and energy high during these times.
Where the guests have been generous and bought more than one gift, you could agree with mom to be and the guests that whilst mom is grateful for all of them, she will open one gift from each gift at the shower, with the rest to be opened later.
Baby shower games come into their own at this point, and we don’t mean the gross baby poop in a diaper one. But games like baby shower bingo work perfectly during the gift-giving part of the event. Every guest gets a blank bingo game card and they have to fill in what presents they think mommy will get. The first one to get a line or to fill their card get’s a prize.
We stock a number of games to choose from in our store including baby shower bingo. It might be worthwhile to get a number of prizes you can give out to the winners if you choose to entertain your guests with baby shower games.
Guestbook + Favors
It’s always a good idea to have a guestbook set up somewhere in the venue so that guests can sign and leave a heartfelt message to the parents-to-be.
You should also consider what favors you will give to the guests as they leave, as a thank you for celebrating the day with the mom to be. Depending on your budget this could be something like a chocolate bar to something more elaborate there are many possibilities.
Thank you Cards
First of all, congratulations, when your mind starts to think about thank you cards, the shower has finished and you’re almost ready to relax.
Again depending on your budget, you can pay for a custom thank you card for the event or download a printable template. You have to work with the mommy-to-be as she might want to personalize the message to each one of her guests.
The time has come to pat yourself on the back for a job well done. You have thrown an awesome baby shower so just sit back relax and charge those batteries, you’ve earned it!
